Where to Stay Near Cook Forest for Christmas 2026: Our 5 Treehouses and Cabins

| Hemlock Haven Retreats |

We are Michael and Amanda, the hosts behind Hemlock Haven Retreats, and every fall the same question starts landing in our inbox: where should we stay near Cook Forest for Christmas? Our honest answer is that it depends on who is coming. Two of you and a fireplace is a very different Christmas from a family of five with stockings to hang and a turkey to roast.

So this guide skips the generic advice and walks through our five treehouses and cabins near Cook Forest, one by one: who each one sleeps, what makes it good for the holidays, and the kind of Christmas it is built for. After that, a few spots close to home for Christmas week, plus the practical details (groceries, check-in, firewood, cancellations) that make the difference when everything else is closed on December 25.

Where to Stay Near Cook Forest for Christmas: Pick by Group Size

If you only read one section, read this one. Here is the short version of which Hemlock Haven stay fits which Christmas:

  • Two of you, fireplace, total quiet: Peaceful Pines Treehouse (sleeps 2)
  • A couple, or two couples, who want the treehouse to be the trip: Enchanted Luxury Treehouse (sleeps 4)
  • A small family or three adults, everything on one level: Cozy Cottage (sleeps 3)
  • A family of five, minutes from the park: Maple Creek Cabin (sleeps 5)
  • Up to six, deep in the woods, nobody around: Salmon Creek Cabin (sleeps 6)

All five come with heat, a kitchen, a Smart TV, Wi-Fi, linens, and towels, and all five use contactless check-in, which matters more than you would think when you are pulling in after dark on Christmas Eve.

Enchanted Luxury Treehouse (Lucinda)

This is the stay guests picture when they think of a treehouse Christmas. You climb the stairs into an open living room with big arched windows, a long built-in fireplace wall, and the creek running below the deck. The kitchen is fully equipped, so a slow Christmas morning breakfast is easy, and the king bed sits up in the loft with windows onto the trees. A sofa bed in the living room makes room for two more, which is why friends and siblings book it together for the holidays.

  • Sleeps: Up to 4 (1 king in the loft, 1 sofa bed)
  • Holiday highlights: Fireplace, full kitchen, private deck over the creek, fire pit, grill
  • Location: Lucinda, about 20 minutes from Cook Forest State Park
  • Good to know: The loft is reached by steep stairs, so it suits guests who are comfortable climbing

The fireplace is the reason this one sells out first for Christmas week. After a cold afternoon on the trails, it is exactly where you want to be.

Peaceful Pines Treehouse (Lucinda)

Peaceful Pines is made for two and nothing else. You cross a little bridge to the door, and inside it is all warm wood, a fireplace below the TV, a kitchenette with a dining bar for two, and a lofted king bed under the A-frame windows. The deck looks out over the stream, which is beautiful with snow on its banks. If your idea of Christmas is a bottle of wine, a movie, and nowhere to be, this is the one.

  • Sleeps: 2 (1 king in the loft)
  • Holiday highlights: Fireplace, Smart TV with Roku, stream-view deck, hammock chair, fire pit area
  • Location: Lucinda, about 20 minutes from Cook Forest State Park
  • Good to know: A kitchenette rather than a full kitchen, so plan a simple Christmas dinner or book a table nearby

It has two bedrooms (a queen and a single), a living room with a TV, a kitchen with a full oven and a dining table, and a covered back porch with rocking chairs that looks out to a fire pit and the woods. It is a great fit for a small family with a baby, a parent with a grown child, or three friends who would rather not deal with stairs or ladders.

  • Sleeps: 3 (1 queen, 1 single)
  • Holiday highlights: Full kitchen with oven, dining table, single-level layout, covered porch, fire pit
  • Location: Vowinckel, minutes from Cook Forest State Park and the Allegheny National Forest

Salmon Creek Cabin (Marienville)

Salmon Creek is for the group that wants to disappear for Christmas. The cabin sits on roughly 35 private acres completely surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest, within walking distance of Salmon Creek and the North Country Trail. Inside, an open living room and kitchen gather around a brick fireplace, with a queen bedroom, a bunk room, and a queen sofa bed. Outside, there is a pond with a fire pit beside it and a deck with a grill. Deer and turkey are regular visitors.

  • Sleeps: Up to 6 (1 queen, 1 bunk bed, 1 queen sofa bed)
  • Holiday highlights: Brick fireplace in the living room, open kitchen and dining area, deck, pond-side fire pit
  • Location: Marienville, deeper in the Allegheny National Forest and a longer drive to Cook Forest than our other stays
  • Good to know: The cabin is not visible from the road and the turnoff is easy to miss, so follow our directions closely in the dark. Firewood is not sold on-site here.

Christmas Week Close to Your Cabin

You do not need a packed schedule for a Christmas in the woods, but a few outings give the week its shape. These are all within a short drive of our stays.

Cook Forest State Park

The park is open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset, Christmas included. In winter the old-growth Forest Cathedral is at its quietest, and the park lists sledding, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling among its winter activities, all depending on snow and ice. A quiet Christmas morning walk under the hemlocks, before the presents, is hard to beat.

A wreath for the cabin door or a poinsettia for the Christmas table is an easy way to make your stay feel like home, and Clarion is also where you will do your big grocery run.

The kitchen turns out Neapolitan-style pizzas and wok dishes, which makes it an easy dinner on a night you would rather not cook, and the shop is a smart place for unusual stocking stuffers like mushroom grow kits. Plan around the calendar: it is closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and major holidays, so aim for Wednesday, December 23, or earlier, and check holiday hours before you go.

Planning Your Christmas Stay Near Cook Forest

A few practical notes from us, so Christmas Day goes smoothly:

  • Shop before the 24th. For a full Christmas dinner, the Walmart and Aldi in Clarion are about 30 minutes away. Leeper Red & White carries fresh meats, and there are Dollar General stores in Marienville and Leeper for the basics. Expect holiday hours everywhere on December 24 and 25.
  • Check-in is at 4 PM. Your personal entry code is texted the day before arrival. In late December it is dark soon after 5 PM, so aim to arrive with some daylight left.
  • Firewood: Please do not bring firewood from out of town (state rules protect our forests). Firewood can be purchased on-site through our guest portal at every stay except Salmon Creek Cabin.
  • No pets. All of our stays have a strict no-pet policy.
  • Book early. Our cancellation policy gives a 100% refund up to 60 days before check-in, so for a Christmas Eve arrival that window closes in late October.
  • Plan for real winter. Snow and ice are normal in December, so bring good boots and a vehicle you trust on back roads, and give yourself extra time on the drive in.
