Cabins Near Allegheny National Forest: A Local Guide

| Hemlock Haven Retreats

We are Michael and Amanda, the couple behind Hemlock Haven Retreats. We grew up in this corner of Pennsylvania, and for eight years we have been hosting guests in two treehouses we built to feel like part of the woods. If you are searching for cabins near Allegheny National Forest, you want a place that puts the forest within easy reach and still feels like a retreat when you come back at night. That is exactly what we built.

Below you will find our two treehouses, what makes each one a fit for different kinds of trips, and the forest highlights that are an easy drive from our porch. When you find the one that feels right, you can check dates and book directly with us.

A Home Base in the Hemlocks

Our treehouses sit on 65 acres in Lickingville, inside the Cook Forest Watershed and about ten minutes from the Cook Forest gate. That puts you just south of the Allegheny National Forest boundary, close enough to reach its biggest attractions on a day trip and quiet enough that you can hear the Clarion River from the porch.

Both treehouses come with a full kitchen, a private hot tub, and a deck that looks straight into the trees. You spend your days exploring, then come back to coffee on the deck in the morning and a soak under the hemlocks at night. It is the kind of stay that makes a day trip to the forest feel rushed by comparison.

Peaceful Pines Treehouse

Peaceful Pines Treehouse is our A-frame, and it is the one we recommend to couples. The king bed and the scenic upper deck give you the strongest feeling of being up in the canopy, and it is where guests come for anniversaries, proposals, and long weekends that are all about slowing down.

The smaller footprint is part of the appeal. You have everything you need, a full kitchen for breakfast in, a private hot tub for the evenings, and a deck where you will spend more time than you planned, without anything extra to take care of. If your trip is about the two of you and the forest, book Peaceful Pines.

Enchanted Evergreen Treehouse

Enchanted Evergreen Treehouse gives you more room to spread out. The larger living space and the fireplace make it the pick for a small family or two couples traveling together, and it is a favorite for cooler months when a fire is half the reason to go.

After a day of hiking or elk viewing, everyone can cook together in the full kitchen, gather by the fireplace, and end the night in the private hot tub. If you are bringing a few more people or you want a cabin that feels cozy in any season, book Enchanted Evergreen.

Which Treehouse Is Right for You

Here is how we usually match guests. If you are a couple looking for a romantic, quiet stay up in the canopy, choose Peaceful Pines Treehouse. If you are a small family or two couples who want a fireplace and more living space, Enchanted Evergreen Treehouse is the one. Both put you ten minutes from Cook Forest and within a comfortable drive of everything in the Allegheny National Forest.

What Is an Easy Drive From Our Treehouses

We send our guests to these places first, and every one of them works as a day trip from Hemlock Haven.

  • Cook Forest State Park. About ten minutes away, Cook Forest is our backyard. The Longfellow Trail through the Forest Cathedral winds under white pines and hemlocks protected since the 1920s, the Clarion River runs right through the park, and the Seneca Point fire tower gives you a view over the whole valley. Our Cook Forest trails guide breaks it down trail by trail.

  • Elk Country Visitor Center. About ninety minutes from our treehouses, Winslow Hill in Benezette is home to the Pennsylvania elk herd. During the rut, from mid-September to mid-October, the bulls bugle and spar in the fields. Our tip: arrive ninety minutes before sunrise or sunset, when the elk move out of the shade.

  • Kinzua Bridge State Park. The region’s marquee stop is about ninety minutes to two hours away. The Skywalk is under rehabilitation through fall 2027, but it is scheduled to temporarily reopen from September 1 to October 31, 2026 for peak foliage. Even without the walk, the overlook and visitor center are worth the drive.

  • The Longhouse Scenic Byway. This 29-mile loop around the Allegheny Reservoir crosses the Kinzua Dam and passes Rimrock Overlook, Jakes Rocks, and the old-growth trail at Hearts Content. Plan on a full day with stops, then drive back to your treehouse for a soak in the hot tub.

  • Marienville and the ATV trails. About half an hour north, Marienville is the hub for the Marienville and Timberline ATV trail systems, with quieter hiking trails and local diners too. Our Marienville trails guide has the details.

For more ideas, our things to do guide and our favorite local restaurants cover the rest of the area.

When to Book

Seasonal Planning Chart For Allegheny National Forest Cabin Trips

Fall is our busiest season. Peak foliage usually lands in mid-October, the elk rut is in full swing, and Kinzua Bridge is at its most photogenic, so we recommend booking fall weekends three to six months out. Summer is best for families and water trips on the Clarion, spring brings quieter trails and better availability, and winter is for cozy stays with snow on the hemlocks and a fire at Enchanted Evergreen. With only two treehouses, our best dates in every season go early.
