Magical Things to Do in Cook Forest in the Winter: Our Local Guide

Many people think of Cook Forest as a summer destination. But if you ask us, winter is when the real magic happens. The crowds disappear, and the ancient trees get covered in a quiet blanket of white snow.

At Hemlock Haven Retreats, we have spent years exploring these woods. We are Michael and Amanda, and along with our kids and our farm animals, we love calling this area home. We know the best spots to find adventure or just relax by a fire.

If you are planning a trip to see us this season, you might be wondering how to fill your days. Here are our favorite things to do in Cook Forest in the winter.

Explore the Forest Cathedral

Walking through the old-growth forest is a must. In the winter, the giant hemlocks and pines look even bigger against the white snow. It feels very peaceful and quiet.

Cook Forest State Park (Longfellow Trail)

The Longfellow Trail is our favorite way to see the “Forest Cathedral.” This trail takes you right through the heart of the ancient trees.
Our guests often tell us they feel like they are in a different world when they hike here. The path is about 1.2 miles long. It can be a bit slippery in winter, so we suggest bringing hiking poles or wearing boots with good grip.

  • Insight: This area has some of the tallest trees in the Northeastern United States.

Go Sledding and Ice Skating

If you are bringing the kids (or just want to feel like a kid again), you have to visit the skating pond. It is a classic winter experience.

Ice Skating Pond & Sledding Slope

Located near River Road, there is a dedicated area for winter fun. There is a nice slope for sledding that is not too steep but fast enough to be fun. Right next to it is a skating pond. The park even turns on lights so you can skate in the evening. Just make sure to bring your own skates and sleds.

đź’ˇ Insight: Always check the ice conditions before you go. The park recommends the ice be at least 4 inches thick for a single skater.

Watch for River Otters

Winter is actually the best time to see river otters. They do not hibernate. In fact, they love to slide on the ice and play in the snow.

Clarion River

We love taking a drive along River Road to look for wildlife. The black water of the river contrasts beautifully with the white snow. Keep your eyes peeled for dark shapes moving on the ice. You might see otters sliding around or hunting for fish. You can also spot bald eagles sitting in the bare trees watching the water.

Cross-Country Skiing

When the snow gets deep, hiking can be tough. That is when we grab our skis. It is a great workout and a smooth way to see the forest.

Groomed Ski Trails

Cook Forest State Park does a great job maintaining trails for skiers. They groom three specific trails: Fire Tower Road, Toms Run Road, and a part of Forest Drive. These are perfect for beginners or experts because the path is smooth and easy to follow. You can glide along under the snowy trees and enjoy the silence.

Go on a Holiday Lights Drive

There is something so cozy about piling into the car with warm blankets and taking a slow winter drive after dark.

Festive Evening Scenic Drive

On clear winter nights, we love driving the roads around Cook Forest and nearby towns to see festive lights and decorated storefronts. Two easy stops are Veterans Memorial Park in Clarion and downtown Brookville, where you can usually find glowing trees, a big Christmas tree, and lots of holiday cheer.

đź’ˇ Insight: Bring a thermos, turn on a holiday playlist, and stop for a few photos. Winter nights in the forest feel extra magical.

Make It a Cabin “S’mores & Cocoa” Night

After a day outside, the most festive thing might be staying in, warm, cozy, and together.

Fireside Treats at Hemlock Haven

Nothing says winter like a mug of hot cocoa and something sweet. We love setting up a simple s’mores night (or oven-baked s’mores if the weather is wild), adding peppermint or cinnamon to cocoa, and making the evening feel like a little celebration.

Cozy add-ons we love:

  • Graham crackers + chocolate + marshmallows (classic)
  • A pinch of cinnamon or peppermint in hot cocoa
  • A “build-your-own” topping bar for kids (and adults)

đź’ˇ Insight: This is one of our favorite ways to end a winter day: no schedule, no rush, just warmth and laughter.
