The Best Cook Forest Trails: A Local’s Guide to Hiking the Forest Cathedral

There is something magical about walking under trees that have stood tall for over 300 years. When you step onto the Cook Forest trails, the air feels fresher, and the world gets a little quieter.

At Hemlock Haven Retreats, we have spent countless days exploring these woods. We are Michael and Amanda, and along with our two kids and our dog, we love finding new paths to wander. Whether you are looking for a steep climb with a great view or a flat path for a family stroll, this park has it all.

Cook Forest State Park is famous for its “Forest Cathedral.” This area holds some of the largest old-growth white pines and hemlocks in the entire Northeastern United States. But with over 47 miles of trails, it can be hard to know where to start.

We put together this guide to help you find the perfect hike for your trip. Here are our favorite trails and local tips to help you enjoy the beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

If you only have time for one hike, it needs to be here. The trees in this section are massive and ancient. Walking here feels like stepping back in time.

Longfellow Trail

This is easily the most famous trail in the park, and for good reason. It takes you right through the heart of the Forest Cathedral.
We love sending our guests here because it showcases the very best of what Cook Forest has to offer. The towering white pines create a canopy that is truly breathtaking. It is a moderate hike, so bring sturdy shoes.

  • Location: Starts near the Log Cabin Inn
  • Insight: This trail passes through a National Natural Landmark area.

Ancient Forest Trail

This trail is a bit shorter, but it packs a punch when it comes to scenery. It cuts across the Longfellow Trail and puts you right in the middle of the old-growth forest.
When we walk here, we always stop to look up. The concentration of tall trees here is unmatched. It is a great option if you want to see the big trees without committing to a very long hike.

  • Insight: Look for white pines that are over 150 feet tall.

💡 Insight: Did you know some trees in the Forest Cathedral are over 300 years old? This area is a National Natural Landmark because it is one of the finest stands of old-growth forest in the Northeast.

Best Views and River Walks

Sometimes you want a hike that rewards you with a spectacular view or the calming sound of water. These are our top picks for scenery.

Cook Forest – Seneca Point

If you want the best photo opportunity in the park, this is the place. The view of the Clarion River valley from the rock overlook is stunning in any season.
Our guests often tell us this was the highlight of their trip. You can drive up to the parking area for an easy walk to the view, or hike up the steep trail if you want a workout. Don’t forget to climb the Fire Tower nearby if you are brave enough!

Clarion River

The River Trail runs parallel to the water and offers a totally different vibe from the deep woods. It is peaceful and often cooler on hot days.
We love spending time by the water. You can hike along the bank or just find a spot to sit and watch the river flow. It is especially beautiful in early summer when the mountain laurel is blooming.

Family-Friendly and Relaxing Hikes

Not every hike needs to be a challenge. If you are staying with us at Hemlock Haven Retreats with small children, these trails are perfect.

Toms Run Trail

This is a favorite for families. It is mostly flat and follows the stream. There is a swinging bridge that kids absolutely love to walk across. It is gentle enough for younger hikers but still very pretty.

Sensory Trail (Paved Trail)

Located near the Sawmill Center for the Arts, this is a short, paved loop. It is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. It is designed to help you use your senses, like touching the bark of trees or listening for birds.

💡 Good to know: The swinging bridge over Toms Run is a classic photo spot. It connects the Birch Trail and Toms Run Trail, making for a fun, short loop.

Quiet Hidden Gems

If you visit on a busy weekend, the main trails can get a little crowded. Here is where we go to find some solitude.

North Country National Scenic Trail Trailhead

This trail stretches across several states, but the section here is lovely. It is often quieter than the Longfellow trail.
Hikers tell us they enjoy the peace and quiet here. It follows Tom’s Run for a while and offers a very serene experience. It is a great place to walk with your dog and just enjoy nature.
