The Best Things to Do in Allegheny National Forest: Our Local Guide

There is something magical about the deep woods of Pennsylvania. The fresh air smells like pine needles. The streams are clear and cold. For us, this place is home. At Hemlock Haven Retreats, we love sharing this beautiful corner of the world with our guests.

We are Michael and Amanda. We grew up here, and now we are raising our two kids (and a whole barnyard of animals) right in the forest. We have spent years exploring the trails, rivers, and hidden gems of the Allegheny National Forest.

This forest covers more than 500,000 acres. That is a lot of ground to cover! It can be hard to know where to start. To help you plan your trip, we put together this guide of our favorite things to do. Whether you want a big adventure or a quiet day by the river, we know the perfect spots.

Here are the best things to do in the Allegheny National Forest.

Must-See Scenic Views

If you only have a short time to visit, you should start with the big views. These are the spots that make people fall in love with our region.

Kinzua Bridge State Park (The Skywalk)

This is one of the most famous landmarks in our area. It was once the longest and highest railroad bridge in the world. A tornado knocked part of it down in 2003. Today, it has been reinvented as the “Skywalk.”

You can walk 600 feet out onto the remaining bridge supports. You are suspended high above the Kinzua Gorge. It offers incredible views of the valley. If you are feeling brave, you can even stand on the glass floor at the end and look straight down. It is a thrill you will not forget.

💡 Insight: This is a great spot for fall foliage. The valley turns bright red and orange in October.

  • Location: 296 Viaduct Rd, Mt Jewett, PA 16740
  • Cost: Free admission to the park and Skywalk

Kinzua Dam and Allegheny Reservoir

The Allegheny Reservoir is huge. It stretches 27 miles and has over 90 miles of shoreline. The Kinzua Dam created this massive lake. It is an impressive sight to see the water held back behind the concrete wall.

This area is perfect for sightseeing. There are several overlooks where you can park and take photos. It is also a popular spot for boating and fishing. We love coming here just to watch the water and enjoy the breeze.

  • Activity: Sightseeing, fishing, boating

Hiking and Nature Trails

We are outdoorsy people by nature. Our family loves hitting the trails. The forest has hundreds of miles of paths for all skill levels.

Jakes Rocks (Mountain Biking)

This is one of the most exciting adventure spots in Allegheny National Forest. What makes it special is that it was designed for riders on purpose. Instead of one straight trail, you get a whole network of routes that weave through rocky forest terrain.

You can choose a quick loop or spend hours linking trails together. The riding feels wild and scenic, with huge boulders, tall trees, and moments where the forest opens up. It is the kind of place that turns a simple bike ride into a full experience.

💡 Insight: Even if you are not riding, there are viewpoints nearby that are perfect for an easy “wow” stop.

North Country Trail

If you want a serious hike, check out the North Country Trail. It is a very long trail that goes across several states, but it cuts right through the Allegheny National Forest.

You do not have to hike the whole thing! You can just pick a small section for a day hike. The trail winds through beautiful valleys and over hills. It is well marked and peaceful. We suggest bringing plenty of water and good shoes.

Fun on the Water

Water is a big part of life here. From the rivers to the lakes, there are plenty of ways to cool off.

Buckaloons Recreation Area

This is a great spot if you want a river day. Buckaloons sits right on the Allegheny River and makes it easy to get on the water without complicated logistics. It is a simple launch, and suddenly you are paddling through wide open river scenery.

What makes this stretch extra fun is the feeling of exploring. The river has islands, quiet pockets, and sandy edges depending on the water level. It feels like a little wilderness adventure, even if you only go out for an hour or two.

💡 Insight: Go early for calmer water and fewer people. It feels more peaceful and more “wild.”

Location: Buckaloons Recreation Area, Allegheny National Forest
Cost: Free to visit (parking or launch fees can vary by season)

This place is a classic. MacBeth’s has been serving visitors in Cook Forest for a long time. The store has a little bit of everything.

There are a few special spots that do not fit into just one category. These are great for adding variety to your trip.

Rimrock Trail and Overlook

This is one of those short hikes that feels way bigger than it is. The trail takes you through dramatic rock formations, with boulders and narrow gaps that make it feel like a natural maze.

Then you reach the overlook. The view opens up over the forest and water, and it is the kind of spot where you just stop talking for a minute. It is easy, memorable, and perfect when you want something scenic without a long trek.

💡 Insight: This one is excellent around sunset when the light softens and the view looks extra dramatic.
