This is our favorite of the Pittsburgh-adjacent options for a lower-key U-pick day. Half Crown Hill is family owned and operated, and it feels like it. Timing matters more than most visitors realize. Northwestern Pennsylvania runs a little cooler than the southern part of the state, so our apple season starts slightly later and wraps up a touch earlier. Here is how we plan around it.
Late August to early September (season opens). The first early apples come on: Ginger Gold, Paula Red, Zestar, early Gala. Some Pittsburgh-area orchards start U-pick as early as August 30. Not every farm is open yet, so call ahead.
September 15 to October 5 (peak dessert apples). This is the sweet spot. Honeycrisp, Gala, McIntosh, Cortland, and Jonathan are all ripe together and orchards are fully stocked. If you are planning one apple trip, aim for the last two weeks of September.
October 1 to October 20 (baking and storage apples). Golden Delicious, Rome, Ida Red, Suncrisp, and Stayman come into their own. These are the apples you actually want for pies, apple butter, and applesauce that will hold up in the freezer.
Mid to late October (late season). Fuji, Goldrush, Keepsake, and Pink Lady where you can find them. Most PA orchards wind down by Halloween, though a few carry into early November.

Option 1: The half-day loop (Emmett’s, closest). Coffee on the porch, leave around 9 AM, hit Emmett’s in Grove City by 10, pick apples and load up on cider and cookies, home by 1 PM. Spend the afternoon on a river float or a short trail in Cook Forest. Bake a crumble in the cabin oven that evening.
Option 2: The Apple Castle Saturday. Save this one for a Saturday since they are closed Sunday. Leave around 9, spend the morning at Apple Castle in New Wilmington, grab lunch nearby, stop in Grove City on the way back for outlet browsing or a walk around Grove City College. Home by dinner.
Option 3: The Pittsburgh festival day. For families who want the full fall carnival, aim for Triple B or Simmons on a Saturday. Leave early (7:30 AM), plan to be there most of the day, and stop for dinner on the drive back. This one is a full commitment, but the memories are worth it.
